Stage 12 Preview – The Fast Men Return in Viadana

22/05/2025

After a few punishing days, the sprinters are ready to take center stage once more in Stage 12 of the Giro d’Italia 2025: 172 km from Modena to Viadana (Oglio-Po). From Emilia to Lombardy, the route presents no major obstacles, and the finish deep in the Po Valley looks almost certain to end in a bunch sprint. The fast men will be keen to make the most of every opportunity the Giro offers – and this is one they won’t want to miss.

The final 70 km are completely flat.

The stage is rolling for the first 100 km, skimming past the Matildic Castles in the Modenese hinterland and featuring two categorized climbs: Baiso (cat. 3 – 4.8 km at 6%) and Borsea (cat. 3 – 3.9 km at 5.5%). The route then reaches Quattro Castella, 70 km from the finish, where the road flattens out completely. The Red Bull KM is located in Brescello, followed by a first pass through the finish line and a final circuit of about 27 km, run entirely on wide, mostly straight roads. The last corner comes with 500 meters to go, setting the stage for a high-speed drag race to the line.

Is this Kooij's day?

Olav Kooij (Visma | Lease a Bike), the reference sprinter of this 2025 Giro d’Italia, has yet to open his account and will be doing everything he can in Viadana to finally break the ice. He’ll have to contend with some familiar faces from this first part of the Giro, starting with Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), current holder of the Maglia Ciclamino, as well as Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) and Casper Van Uden (Picnic PostNL).

Also hoping to be in the mix are Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5), Milan Fretin (Cofidis), and Paul Magnier (Soudal-QuickStep).
